Candela Benjamin discovered a passion for languages from an early age. Growing up with bilingual cousins sparked a fascination with language learning and eventually led to a degree in Spanish and Portuguese from the University of Bristol. After graduating, Benjamin qualified as a teacher and began teaching English and Spanish as foreign languages in Madrid, Spain. However, years spent in the classroom, both as a student and a teacher, revealed a problem. Much of the material available to language learners was painfully dull. The fictional stories were often tedious, dreary, or overly serious, and few reflected the kinds of books Benjamin actually enjoyed reading. Why weren’t there any dramatic, funny, captivating love stories that simultaneously made you laugh and taught you Spanish? There were thousands of brilliant stories for children, but nothing for adults who wanted to read something for grown-ups, something funny, something a little juicy. The conclusion was simple: creating the right type of stories could transform language learning for adults. Benjamin’s mission is to bring fun and spice to education by merging two worlds that are supposed to be kept apart. Meaningful learning with gossip, with scandal, with the secrets we tell our best friends and the stories we share at the dinner table after one too many wines.
