Ken Washburn never set out to write history, but a chance discovery placed him at the center of a story that had been forgotten for more than 150 years. In the early 1970s, while cleaning out a family cabin in California, Washburn discovered a small packet of old documents hidden inside a trunk. What began as simple curiosity grew into a decades-long journey through letters, legal papers, and historical records connected to Luis Vernet and the history of the Falkland Islands. For more than fifty years Washburn preserved the fragile documents while researching the people, events, and families connected to them. His work eventually led to the publication of The Vernet Letters and The Last Custodian, bringing a forgotten archive and its story back into the light. Washburn lives in Indiana with his wife Julie and continues to research and share the history connected to the documents he discovered.
