I grew up believing that my future had already been decided for me. When I was ten, my parents joined a strict religious group that taught we were among the chosen few who would be saved. For seven years I lived with the certainty that God had already chosen whether I would live or be destroyed. Then at seventeen, everything changed. My parents left the group and pulled me out with them. In a single moment I went from being “special” to being doomed. It took me another ten years to realize the truth: No one — not God, not any organization, not any person — has the right to choose your life for you. Freedom isn’t being told what to believe. Freedom is the responsibility, and the terrifying beauty, of choosing for yourself. The Nomadin Trilogy grew out of that long, painful realization. At its heart, this is a story about freedom and choice — and how evil only exists because someone, somewhere, chooses it. Ilien’s journey is my attempt to explore what it really means to take ownership of your own life, even when the cost is high. Thank you for reading.
