Im Örtchen Cattle Gulch will eine aufgebrachte Menschenmenge Ovide Byrde an den Kragen – einen Tierschützer und Vegetarier, der angeblich ein Pferd gestohlen hat! Byrde bestreitet das, und Lucky Luke, der eigentlich auf der Durchreise ist, rettet ihn vor der wütenden Meute. Er begleitet Byrde auf seine Farm, die eine Arche für geschundene Haus- und Wildtiere ist. Hier lebt auch Rantanplan, der einen Goldklumpen findet und zu Byrde nach Hause bringt. Die Nachricht vom Goldfund erreicht auch den Gauner Tacos Cornseed. Er gibt sich bei Byrde als Tierschützer aus, will aber eigentlich nur abkassieren.
