Story0
In the following pages no attempt has been made to bring to light any new fact in Natural History. The papers are laid before the notice of the reader for as much, or as little, as they are worth; and lay claim to no more importance than may be attached to them as earnest records of happy solitary rambles—in storm or sunshine, year in and year out—among the green woods and meadowlands of Kent and Sussex. (From the book’s preface by Edward Tickner Edwardes). Side-Lights of Nature was originally published in 1898 and was the first book authored by Tickner Edwardes. It was reprinted in 1912...

Story0
‘A Country Calendar’ was written in 1928 by the Reverend Tickner Edwardes, who was the vicar of Burpham, a small village tucked away in the South Downs of West Sussex in England. The book presents a reflective look at the changing face of nature, the environment and the landscape over twelve chapters as the year progresses from January through to December. Although well known around the South Downs in West Sussex as 'The Bee-man of Burpham', Tickner Edwardes also had a great affinity for all aspects of nature and the countryside and his words both skillfully and eloquently create an ...

"Is it true that a bee can only sting once?" I asked him, as he bent again over the crocus beds. He laughed. "What would be the good of a sword to a soldier," he said, "if only one blow could be struck with it? It is certainly true that the bee does not usually sting a second time, but that is only because you are too hasty with her. ...But now watch how the thing works naturally." A bee had settled on his hand as he was speaking. He closed his fingers gently over it, and forced it to sting. "Now," he continued, quite unconcernedly, "look what really happens..." (from The Bee-Master of ...

Story0
Originally published by a master bee-keeper in 1923, this 3rd edition of ‘Bee-Keeping For All’ was completely revised (in 1929) and brought up to date to reflect at that time the advance in knowledge and practical improvements in all aspects of bee-keeping work that would have usefully concerned the average small hive-owner or those with whom honey and wax production formed only one activity among many areas of their business. As a lifelong bee-keeper Tickner Edwardes shares his extensive practical understanding and in-depth knowledge of apiculture with details of how to set up and manage ...

The sun shines — you know it has always shone, changeless as Time itself. With such a faith — unfounded and therefore incontestable — I came under the glow of one brave June morning, threading field after field of blossoming clover until I stood at the gate of the bee-garden over against the hill. I raised the latch of the gate. Its sharp click drew to its full lean height a figure at the end of the garden, which was bending down in the midst of a wilderness of hives. The man came towards me coatless, his rolled-up shirt-sleeves baring wiry brown arms to the hot June sun. The bee-master ...

Story0
Originally published by a master bee-keeper in 1925, this book ‘Bee-Keeping Do’s and Dont’s’ was written to compliment an earlier book produced by the author - ‘Bee-Keeping For All’, to address specific difficulties that a bee-keeper might encounter in their apiary and to offer tried and tested ideas and solutions that might help overcome these problem areas. Tickner Edwardes was well known around the South Downs in West Sussex as 'The Bee-man of Burpham.' He shares his extensive practical understanding and in-depth knowledge of apiculture which could be of significant use to any ...

Story0
Tickner Edwardes (properly Edward Tickner Edwardes) served in the Royal Army Medical Corps during WWI and later became the vicar of the West Sussex village of Burpham. Edwardes has the same naturalist's fascination with the world around him as Gilbert White had, a century before. He wrote on beekeeping, wrote what is probably the earliest book describing hitchhiking, and wrote a number of books (fiction and non-fiction) about life on the Sussex Downs. "Neighbourhood" is a semi-fictionalised essay on life in his village, and on its people, month by month through the year.

Is it true that a bee can only sting once? I asked, as he leaned over the vibrant crocus beds. He chuckled softly, responding, What good is a sword to a soldier if it can only strike once? While its true that bees typically dont sting more than once, thats only because youre too quick with them. ...Now, let me show you how it really works. As he spoke, a bee landed on his hand. With a gentle clasp of his fingers, he encouraged it to sting. Now, he continued, unfazed, observe what truly happens... (from The Bee-Master of Warrilow) Steeped in the wisdom of his bee-keeping ancestors, the ...

Beneath the bright sun of a June morning, I ventured into a tapestry of fields adorned with blooming clover, arriving at the gate of a bee-garden nestled against the hill. As I lifted the latch, its sharp click summoned a figure from the depths of the garden—a coatless man with wiry brown arms, immersed in his world of hives. The bee-master, with keen grey eyes and a sun-kissed, honest face, welcomed me with words as abundant as the bees he tended. Eager to share his passion, he guided me through his domain, revealing the art and science of beekeeping as only a true master could. (From The ...

Story0
During the tumultuous years of the First World War, the Royal Army Medical Corps stood as a vital lifeline for British and Allied troops, whether they were engaged in fierce battles on the frontlines or involved in various military operations across the vast theaters of war. As the conflict raged on and the battlefront expanded from Europe to the Middle East, the demand for medical support surged, necessitating the rapid establishment of extensive medical facilities to care for the increasing number of wounded, sick, and maimed soldiers needing urgent attention. The British and Allied forces ...
